For some, gamification may sound like a trendy buzzword. But beneath the surface lies a powerful way to motivate, engage, and develop employees. So, what exactly is gamification – and how does it differ from serious games?

What is gamification?

Gamification is the use of game mechanics in a non-game context. It can be very simple: points, badges, or rankings that employees receive when they reach their goals.

The purpose isn’t to play a game, but to encourage desired behavior.

The difference with serious games

  • Gamification: adds game elements to existing processes. Example: a sustainability competition between departments, awarding points for saving energy.

  • Serious game: a full-fledged game designed around a learning objective. Example: a simulation where teams practice financial and operational decision-making.

Why does gamification work?

  1. Motivation through progress – People love seeing their progress.

  2. Social dynamics – Competition and collaboration strengthen team spirit.

  3. Instant feedback – Immediate responses show whether you’re on track, which accelerates learning.

Where can it be applied?

The possibilities of gamification in the workplace are endless.

At Wakaaro, for example, we integrated a reward system at Toyota Financial Services to motivate sales teams to promote specific products more effectively.

Other applications include:

  • Onboarding new employees

  • Health and safety programs

  • Sustainability initiatives

  • Learning new tools or procedures

  • ...

Gamification is much more than a passing trend. It’s a proven method to inspire employees and bring organizational goals within reach. And when combined with serious games, it creates a powerful learning ecosystem.
